Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) – Christina Chi Ding

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a chronic, long-term condition that affects how a woman’s ovaries function, and is the most common cause of infertility in women.  In order to properly diagnose PCOS a pelvic ultrasound is required, as well as blood tests to check for hormonal imbalances. If a woman has PCOS she is unable to ovulate normally as the ovaries contain a large number of small, harmless follicles. However, these follicles prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg, so ovulation cannot occur normally. There is no exact cause for PCOS, but it usually manifests during adolescence. It causes hormonal balances which can lead to irregular periods, weight gain and excess body hair. There is currently no cure for PCOS, but there are some steps that can help keep their condition under control. Regular check-ups are recommended if diagnosed.
